World music formats


general information
World music is a very general term used to describe popular musical formats outside the United States. Stations who claim their format as world music are simply playing a mix of a number of the formats described on this web page.

Reggae, Soca, Calypso
Popular music native to the Caribbean islands. All three formats have destinctive sounds. In general soca is a much faster beat than reggae tends to be. Stations with a Caribbean music format play a mix of the three along with some pop and urban hits.

Hawaiian
Popular native music of the Hawaiian islands. Sometimes known as island music, this terminology refers to music of any of the Pacific islands.

Traditional music formats
Of course, every nation or geographical region has a musical type of there own. It is most commonly refered to as traditional music. Such examples include traditional Dutch folk (in Holland), traditional Greek music of the Greek isles, and traditional Turkish music native to Turkey just to name a few.
