College and School radio formats
College
These stations are owned by a university, college or community college and usually operated by a
student organization through volunteer time. Most all college stations operate in the college band,
88FM to 92FM in the United States. It is not uncommon for a station to be available via cable radio only.
The programming includes a variety of local news and school information but also includes some
type of music format such as free-form, progressive, alternative, classical, jazz.
Student
This format is similar to college radio, but these stations are owned by a local high school or
grade school and are usually maintained by a student organization within that school. These stations
also include school information and a musical format of some type.
